Why I Don’t Tell my Son his Donated Toys and Clothes are going to Children in Need.

When I donate any of my son's toys or clothes I don't tell him they're going to children in need. Even if the purpose of the donation is to go to an individual who in fact can't afford the items. I don't say that, because I don't want him to associate buying or receiving "pre-loved" items as a sign of lacking.

In fact, my son has gone to school in more clothes lovingly gifted to us secondhand than he has in new clothes. He doesn't know and doesn't care, and fun fact, the rest of the world doesn't know and doesn't care. I don't want him to think badly of the fact that the Paw Patrol shirt he was so excited to receive had been worn by a little boy before him.

I want him to associate passing on our items we no longer need to saving usable items from the landfill, and bringing joy to another individual who may use and value that item regardless of their "need."

From a financial perspective, I think a lot of us overextend ourselves financially due to a need to have the latest and greatest new item. Fast fashion has been a killer for many credit card limits and bank accounts, and I've also been guilty 🙋‍♀️. By being more intentional with my purchases and looking to see if those items are available pre-loved has left more room in my closets and wallet.

Personally, I always prefer to buy premium like new items used than pay the same for lower quality items brand new.
